Muna
Synopsis
British-Somali teen Muna is desperate to go on the school trip to escape the monotony of her conservative household and, of course, provide the greatest playlist of all time. But her parents aren’t so sure. Tragedy strikes when her grandfather dies back in Somalia, and Muna has to navigate a confusing mourning period for someone she never really knew - all while still desperately hoping to persuade her mother to change her mind about the trip.
About the Filmmaker
Warda began her career assisting Faye Ward & the Fable Pictures team on ‘Rocks’, where she consulted on the elements of Somali representation within the film. Her first short ‘Sorry My Somali Is Not Very Good’ premiered on BFI Player in June 2021. Expanding her talents into the theatre, Warda directed’ Dugsi Dayz’ a comedic riff on The Breakfast Club that won the 2023 untapped award and, following a month-long run at Edinburgh Fringe, won the BBC Popcorn New Writing Award.
